What are Evaporator Coils?
Evaporator coils are the part of your air conditioning and heating system that works as the heat exchanger. Inside the coil, the refrigerant evaporates as it absorbs heat from the indoor air that passes over it. It is important that evaporator coils be matched up to the size of the condensing coil to run efficiently. If the equipment does not match, it can lead to problems, and your system may freeze up and fail to function.
What are the different types of Evaporator Coils?
- VERTICAL CASED – A vertical cased evaporator coil is used with furnaces in the upflow or downflow position. The coils physical dimensions are made to fit correctly with the furnace. Typically a cased coil would be selected when installing a new furnace.
- VERTICAL UNCASED – An uncased vertical evaporator coil is used with furnaces that are in the vertical position (upflow or downflow). Uncased coils are typically installed when adding air conditioning or a heat pump system to an existing furnace.
- HORIZONTAL CASED – A horizontal evaporator coil is used for furnaces in the horizontal position (lying on its side). The physical dimensions of the horizontal cased coils are designed to fit correctly with the furnace.
- CASED MULTI-POSITIONAL – A cased multi-positional evaporator coil is used with furnaces in the upflow, downflow, or horizontal position. The coils are designed to fit correctly with the furnace.
